Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences ON TOUR presents:
blues journey
adapted from the book Blues Journey by Walter Dean Myers with pictures by Christopher Myers
adapted for the stage by Jerome Hairston
directed by Scot Reese
Commissioned by The Kennedy Center Education Department
Journey with us as we trace the blues from its early beginnings in southern American fields to its global impact on music today. Through informative interviews and a wealth of music clips, you’ll learn the ins and outs of blues music and find out how the history of the blues has been brought to life on stage. Learning the history of the blues coincides with learning about African slavery, the Great Migration, and racial discrimination and prejudice. Studying the blues is an excellent vehicle for integrating language arts, history/social studies, and music standards. Use Blues Journey as a jumping off point for discussing the African-American experience in the early 20th century.
"Cuesheet" Performance Guides are available to teachers highlighting different activities and information for students for use before and after the performance. Study Guides, as well as the Kennedy Center's ArtsEdge educational website, are also available for additional educational opportunities. This truly original, truly American performance will stun and awe your students, educating everyone about a truly American art form. Join us for a post-production question-and-answer session with the company.

Jouney to the Soul of Africa with
SAMITE
"I am convinced that we are all moved by the same desires, needs, and emotions, regardless of the language in which those feelings are expressed." – SAMITE
Founder of the non-profit organization Musicians for Peace, Samite Mulondo presents his multimedia performance experience: Journey to the Soul of Africa. A Ugandan refugee and musician, Samite, started the organization to "enable musicians throughout the world to share their music to promote peace, understanding, and harmony among peoples with special emphasis on the displaced or distressed."
Your class will have the unique opportunity to experience Eastern African musical instruments, rhythms, and melodies. Samite's joy for life is evident throughout his inspiring performance. His heartfelt songs and captivating stories will leave your students talking months. Samite's broad perspective, encompassing cultures from Africa's East coast to it's West, allows students a comprehensive look into the foods, housing, education, music and myriad other cultural aspects. Samite even entertains with photos of some of the distinctive and rare animals native to Africa.
Whether your students are singing, dancing or just conversing with this remarkable humanitarian, Samite does not disappoint!
"The multiple rhythms are forceful but not domineering, and Samite’s melodies ride over and through them to create a soothing, almost lullaby-like effect…" – Los Angeles Times
"Samite wraps his warm voice around melodies that seem to rise up off the Ugandan plateau, caressed by his kalimbas and other native instruments." – Billboard
"Organic, rootsy, and yet highly sophisticated" – Sing Out Magazine |
